Since arriving in London the Prophetik team has encountered many entertaining and memorable events. The first three days consisted of model castings, setting up at exhibition, trying to free the Hogslop band from London Airport Security, opening London Fashion Week, dinner with Jimmy Choo, and an after party that consisted of old time two stepping on the roof of the Sanctum Soho. Our first three days may have resulted in little sleep, yet the final outcome could not have been more successful.

As London Fashion Week approaches, it's normal to feel a bit of stress in preparing for the show. Luckily Tennessee offers a great landscape to get away from it all. Designer Garner likes to ride bareback through the wooded areas of Leipers Fork and let the horses wade the water. The days are starting to cool down as we approach the end of summer and nothing calms us all down like a serene ride through the countryside.

"Until recently, I had never heard of designer Jeff Garner or his clothing line, Prophetik. Garner’s clothing line will be the center piece of the upcoming Green Breeze Fashion Show, a fund raiser for land conservation. Prophetik, launched by Garner eight years ago, is a fashion forward, ecologically friendly, sustainable clothing line, for both men and women. Garner goes a long way to ensure his line is eco-friendly; from the fabrics, to the dyes, which are made from plants he grows in his own garden. As you probably already know, Prophetik is hitting the road this summer for a handful of charity fashion shows. We keep telling you that the tour benefits Suzy Amis Cameron's MUSE Elementary, but we haven't really told you what it is. Let's start here. MUSE Elementary's Mission and Vision:

"At MUSE Elementary, we create an environment where joy leads and learning follows - where young minds are stimulated through intellectual rigor and hands-on experience, bodies are nourished with fresh organic foods, and awareness of each individual's connection to our planet and all living things, is cultivated daily"

The Program:

MUSE Elementary focuses on a Reggio-inspired experience. The key priniciples include:

1. The Image of the Child: Adults see each child as unique, strong, and full of potential.

2. The Role of the Teacher: Teachers are partners in the child's learning experience.

3. Symbolic Representation: Children are given chances to represent their ideas and emotions through "languages", including verbal, written, visual art, drama, and more.

4. Education Based on Interaction and Collaboration: Education is a collaboration betweeen children and peers, teachers and other teachers, teachers and families, and the school and the community.

5. The Project Approach: Children learn through long-term projects based on their own curiousities, interests, and understandings.

6. Time: Projects and activies are not fragmented, nor decontextualized. Instead, they build upon one another over time.

8. The Role of the Environment: Through conscious use of space, color, natural light, appropriate learning materials, and displays of children's work, the environment becomes another teacher.

"The men’s retail business makes up 20 percent of the market, with eco-fashion constituting only 7 percent (5 percent of which is women’s.)"

"We also need to create consumer demand so that all design houses will be forced to follow the eco-trail and actually do something positive for the environment—which we are all a part of—even if they are only motivated by profit margins and numbers."

Fashion Thirst Blog writes a "love letter" to it's readers about Prophetik debut at LFW2010

There is a bit of romanticism hidden beneath the bloody battle of war, and this can be seen in the Southern Shores collection. Garner says of the collection,

"Southern Shores is influenced by being raised in the South, in this culture, and [by] the history of being in Franklin, Tennessee, which was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. We need to learn that fighting is not always the answer, you know? There is always another way."

We often fail to acknowledge the love and romance hidden behind the fight. There is an extensive collection of love letters recovered from the Civil War. Soldiers wrote their hopes for a future of love on the land they were fighting to keep for their own. The following is an excerpt of a letter written from Nashville, Tennessee in 1863:

"Your letters are received by me with the greatest pleasure, and a beating heart always waits a reply. I have written a good many letters to other girls. Letters of friendship, but those I write to you. I want you to receive them for more than mere friendship. For let me say that your memory is ever dear to me and if we never again meet on Earth I shall ever Cherish the fond remembrance of Thee, and think of the pleasant hours passed in your society, but let me indulge the hope that we may again meet ere long." (Civil War Love Letters)

If we can focus on love like this, we can spread the message Garner implies when he says, "There's always another way." Prophetik spreads the philosophy that if we understand and embrace love, it can lead to a great future where we act in ways that relieve the suffering of people.

Editor of Fashion Thirst Blog, Monica Cummings, has written us a "love letter" of her own and comments on the romanticism. She writes of the Southern Shores debut at London Fashion Week 2010,

London Fashion Week's Off-Schedule began Friday with some 45 of the

industry's emerging creatives showcasing their autumn/winter 2010/11

collections alongside the British Fashion Council's headline shows.

Highlight shows so far have included Bernard Chandran, a line favoured by

singer Estelle, which this season saw structured tailoring combining wools and

silks with heavy beaded embellishment making for statement eveningwear.

New to the schedule, eco-label Prophetik on the other hand looked to the

American Civil War for inspiration, pulling in recycled silk floor-length smock

dresses alongside organic cotton jodhpurs and hemp stretch frock coats.

David Koma, last season's Merit Award winner at Vauxhall Fashion Scout,

undoubtedly attracted one of the largest crowds, the front row taken up by

editors including Sarah Mower and Hilary Alexander, and Browns' Joan

Burstein.

His now signature bodycon dresses were a monochromatic nod to geometric

pattern, combining soft leather with wools and flesh-exposing cutouts.

Burstein, who exclusively stocked Koma's spring/summer 2010 line at Browns

Focus, was once again a fan. She told WGSN she was impressed by not only

how talented and creative Koma is but how focused and professional he

comes across.

The same could be reflected across this season's off schedule, the existence

of which she emphasised as what London is all about: "There's so much talent

here," she said. "My team try and get to all the off schedule shows and we

follow the progress of all the designers we stock including Mark Fast, Felder

Felder, Mary Katrantzou and Holly Fulton, many of whom got their start at

Off-Schedule."

Vauxhall Fashion Scout director Martyn Roberts added: "London is all about

showcasing a variety of the best young design talent there is, and our aim is

to support innovation at whatever level the designers are at. A few years ago

it was catwalk or nothing, now there are all sorts of opportunities including

presentations, or if they're not in the position to show yet, the exhibition."

On|Off, the other key Off-Schedule host, was relocated at Victoria House this

season, also welcoming a large exhibition space complete with stuffed deer

and ceiling sculpture made from hand-cut paper, as well as a tribute wall to

Alexander McQueen in collaboration with Catwalking.com featuring hundreds

of images on 40 embedded iPods.

The On|Off Presents show proved another highlight, this season with Derek

Lawlor, Mr + Mr, Samantha Cole and Txell Miras all making their fashion

week debut.

Still to come Monday is Pam Hogg, while over at Vauxhall Fashion Scout is

the much-anticipated Hermione de Paula, a highlight of last season's Ones to

Watch show and the winner of the autumn/winter 2010/11 VFS Merit Award.

Tuesday will also see William Tempest in his third and final season under the

Merit Award scheme. "We'll still be working with him," said Roberts. "We're

helping him find new sponsors and grow because we do believe he should be

on schedule next season."

Vauxhall Fashion Scout housed Designer Jeff Garner for his Prophetik Fall 2010 show. Dusty indigos, taupe and Crayola blue made up the color palette both for the menswear and womenswear which read like a day in the English countryside from the nipped in vests, waistcoats and riding boots.Did we mention there was a live horse welcoming us at the entrance? The prairie-esque ball gowns were lovely, and a new way to look at eco-friendly in terms of stylng womenswear, but the formal velvet pieces were probably more saleable for the actual public.- Lynn Furge

Prophetik: Making Ethical Fashion Gorgeous & Wearable

While a lot of people view fashion as ridiculous, frivolous and shallow – there are many of us who know better.

Sure, there are many aspects of fashion that seem unnecessary, but with organizations and brands such as the Ethical Fashion Forum, Estethica, and Prophetik – it’s clear that there are some peope who sincerely want Fashion’s image to change.

Yesterday, Jeff Garner’s Prophetik took to the Vauxhall Fashion Scout catwalk, showcasing his Civil War era inspired clothing made strictly from sustainable and environmentally friendly fabrics such as cottons, hemp, flax, Greenspun, organic pigment dyed GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified fabrics.

We have spoken a lot of sustainable fashion on BitchBuzz Style, but admittedly, my own personal wardrobe does not include many recycled or GOTS friendly items as, well, a lot of sustainable fashion item don’t seem, er, wearable.

I’ve gone to many an Estethica presentation, and while many of the items are innovative, creative, and meaningful – as with lots of high fashion items, I don’t know how the hell I’d wear it.

A lot of ethical fashion brands take this avant garde creativity to another level, resulting in things that look like they’re, well, recycled, and as much as I hate to say it, they look as though only a hippy would wear them. Yes. There. I said it. A HIPPY.

However, Prophetik’s show has completely changed my mind about sustainable fashion that’s actually wearable by your every day person, as Jeff Garner’s designs for the latest Prophetik collection are inspired, brilliant, and there were plenty of pieces of both mens and womens wear that I would wear in a heartbeat.

I wasn’t sure what to expect. Sustainable fabrics are always tricky. Sometimes they hang oddly on the body. But the music before the show got the American in me all excited as Garner was clearly dedicated to his theme, as the upbeat bluegrass tunes from artists such as Alison Krauss has the likes of even Hilary Alexander dancing in her seat.

Violinist, Anna Cward, and a guitarist, Jason Bynum, opened the show, playing on either sides of the catwalk. Their haunting and country-inspired tune hung in the air while a lone model walked out into the spotlight, in a stunning and positively inspired long black gown made from 1804 recycled silk.

It was ghostly and I instantly felt as if I had accidentally wandered into some sort of awesomely gothic civil war horror film. And then those bright white lights flashed on, and Man Raze (formerly of Def Leppard and the Sex Pistols) started rocking out in the corner.

It was blue grass and rock and roll on electric speed, and the models and the clothing looked like the exotic 1800s combination of Pride & Prejudice meets Little House in the Prairie... but in a battle field in Tennessee.

Vintage, scuffed boots from Judy’s Tack Shop in Franklin, Tennessee (where Garner is from) and vintage boots by 282 Portobello Road donned the feet of every model.

Navy blue and beautifully structed military jackets hung deliciously on the shoulders of the male models, their coat tails, no doubt, reminding every woman in the room of some naughty Darcy fantasy.

Hemp an cotton jodhpurs, indigo-dyed jackets, skinny trousers and dresses made from peace silk lining paraded down the catwalk, one after another.

Each song matched the energy of the collection, and each piece that moved before me absolutely gorgeous.

Jeff Garner and Porphetik have proved to me that sustainable fabrics can be both gorgeous and wearable, and I am a full-blown Prophetik fan and supporter now.

Prophetik AW10 -Sustainable collection with rock attitude

Prophetik’s AW10 show opened at Vauxhall Fashion Scout yesterday to the haunting sound of a lone violin. Violinist Anna Crawd walked slowly onto the dimly lit catwalk where she was accompanied by guitarist Jason Bynum. As they played their blue-grass tune they were joined by a ghost like model dressed in a black vintage silk, high collared, corseted dress that could have come straight from 1800's Tennessee. The model continued her haunting walk - gliding with an expressionless stare along the catwalk. As she disappeared backstage, the bright spotlights went up, the blue grass faded and the room was filled with the sound of nuwave rock from Man Raze playing in the corner.

A procession of perfectly executed pieces inspired by the American Civil War came onto the catwalk. Full length peace silk dresses - worn with vintage boots - floated by, slouchy jodphurs, neat fitted jackets, indigo dyed dresses and subtle paint splattered prints on hemp jersey. Male models strode by in structured military coats with vintage Civil War buttons layered over herringbone hemp jackets and waistcoats. And, finally a blood red distressed velvet gown brought the show to a close.Stunning.

All pieces were created from organic and sustainable fabrics including cotton, flax, corduroy, denim and Greenspun fleece (made from recycled bottles). Crinkled and washed finishes – synonymous with organic clothing – were given a fashion edge. A kind of homespun with rock musician attitude.

I loved every piece that came along the catwalk. It’s fantastic that it’s a completely sustainable collection but what’s more is that each individual piece is well designed and extremely wearable. And that’s what grabs your attention before anything else.

Unfortunately, I was having camera problems during the show. Or rather my camera was having photographer problems so I’ve taken these photos from other sites.

It seems to be that medival is the theme of day one as the Prophetik collection followed suit with huge puffball shoulders, leg of mutton sleeves and cinched waists that ended up in full, floor length skirts and dresses. It had all the inspirations of a witch hunt and menswear was layered with cropped waistcoats, long pleated back frock coats and skinny leg trousers tucked into riding boots.

Clothes featured deconstructed construction with pintucks and drapery and while parts of the collection were quite formal, there were plenty of commercial off the should jumpers, t shirt dresses and jean jackets.

Colours were very USA, with blue hues, red, black, white and brick tones.
Like earlier there was plenty of velvet setting the collection bang on trend. While there were avant guarde pieces, overall it was a very commercially viable collection, with strong menswear.

First day of London Fashion Week and first up was Prophetik. Walking into the beautiful catwalk space at the Freemasons Hall to country music, the lights dim and a solitary violin starts to play. Suddenly the band starts, as we revealed yesterday Man Raze, one part Sex Pistols two parts Def Leppard were providing the music.

Floor length herringbone and hemp dress showcase the Little House on the Prairie/American civil war theme. Long capes with large collars worn over hooded dresses and jodhpurs. Vintage buttons, riding boots and big bouncy curls complete the country look.

Layered menswear followed the same theme, cord blazers, denim shirts, fitted waistcoats with denim trousers all styled with knotted neckerchiefs.

The final outfit, a red velvet floor length dress dragged along the catwalk. The show really kick started the week's proceedings. We're ready for more now!

Prophetik autumn/winter 2010/11 collection

Eco fashion Inspired by American Civil War and painted by elephants at London Fashion Week.

You can’t say London Fashion Week isn’t eclectic. The catwalk debut of the eco-chic, US brand, Prophetik, took place under the Vauxhall Fashion Scout banner this morning.

Guests were welcomed to the Freemason’s Hall in Covent Garden, by a 15-hand bay, called Zack. The collection, by the Tennessee poet and designer, Jeff Garner, was inspired by the American Civil War, and paraded to live music by a former Sex Pistols’ drummer and an ex-Def Leppard lead guitarist.

The clothes were dyed with plants and herbs from Garner’s garden – indigo for blue, for example, marigold for gold, and yurba mate, for silver. Military jackets were fastened with genuine buttons from original Confederate Army uniforms.

Organic cotton dresses featured abstract and "splatter" prints "painted" by two elephants in a southern Thailand sanctuary – part of the Asia Elephant Art Conservancy Project.

Riding cloaks came in the faded colours of the cavalry and "Gone With the Wind", long, corseted dresses, in organic cotton with a homespun feel, and velvet. The collection is planned to be sold at Eco Age, which is run by the actor Colin Firth’s wife, Livia Giuggioli, in Chiswick, west London.

Garner, who started his career in the music industry, moved into fashion eight years ago, when he launched Prophetik. He has dressed many of America's top music stars including Cameron Diaz, Rihanna, Sheryl Crow, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Kings of Leon, and the Jonas brothers.

JEFF GARNER, whose Prophetik show took to the Vauxhall Fashion Scout catwalk today, is a big promoter of sustainable fashion - and the designer couldn't wait to bring his fashion message to the London catwalk.

"I believe that all fashion will go the sustainable direction and within a few years, if someone is walking down the street in a chemically dyed, polyester polo, they would get chastised for not wearing a sustainable garment. I think it is the only direction it can go, like what the CD now is to the cassette tape. I don't think society will ever slow down on consumerism but I do believe that it will eventually insist on purchasing fashion made of all sustainable elements."

The designer, who counts Sheryl Crow and Kings of Leon amongst his fans, made sure all aspects of the production of today's show also had a sustainable conscience. And with that sorted, he was looking forward to a London holiday.

"I'm really fond of London," Garner told us, "so Fashion Week gives me a reason to live in the city for part of the year and ride horses in Hyde Park!

Catwalk Report - Prophetik Autumn/Winter 2010

Eco-fashion inspired by the American Civil War - all the way from Tennessee. Tom Jeffreys reports from the Prophetik show at London Fashion Week.

A lone violinist fiddles out a tune, a ditty reminiscent of the old-time values of the American South – not the contemporary stereotype but something more refined and authentic. And fun! The assembled fashion crowd are even having a little dance – well, some of them are at least. This evocative music sets the tone for the London Fashion Week catwalk debut of Tennessee-based designer Jeff Garner's super eco-friendly brand Prophetik.

Prophetik is all about sustainability: the collection uses organic cottons, hemp, and recycled fabrics like Greenspun, made with recycled bottles. All the dying is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified, and they hand organic dye with indigo grown in the studio’s own garden. All materials are sourced in America and Canada, and everything is then made in the designer's home town of Tennessee.

Inspired by the American Civil War, the collection is an exploration of hardship, independence and vulnerability. Combining practical workwear – denim-esque waistcoats, wooden buttons, herringbone – with more luxurious and elegant eveningwear, the girls are reminiscent of those brave heroines in old westerns. Husbands killed in brawls and battles, they're left behind, alone, to man the ranch. Delicate, but tough, practically-minded but beautiful, these girls combine wholesomeness and hardship with a tinge of sad regret.

Jodphurs, riding boots and ripped leggings in greys and blues hint at a willingness to muck in, whilst colour is introduced into the more dressy elements: these are not tomboys. A showstopping red bustier in recycled velvet is an apt, uplifting, finale.

The boys don't quite captivate like the girls – in terms of force or complexity of character: they're more like the hopeful suitors. Three-quarter length frock coats, waistcoats, and peace silk neckties hint at something of the dandy, albeit a nineteenth century Southern dandy, restrained by adversity. It more than resonates today.

I didn't really know what to expect from Jeff Garner's Prophetik, a sustainable clothing label launched in Franklin, Tennessee. I went there intrigued by promises of a show influenced by the American Civil War. While waiting to get to my seat, I saw Hillary Alexander, looking super swish in her colourful kimono and I knew this was going to be interesting.

he show opened on a stunning black dress directly out of some Gone with the Wind wet dream and carried on with silhouettes I could best describe as a punk Scarlet O'Hara. Jodphurs, period inspired dresses, velvet, denim, raggedy textures - all perfectly executed. There was even a spot of double denim for good measure, it was an open hommage to America's history after all.

I confess a soft spot for the very bouncy and natural hair featured in the show, created by Toni & Guy but light years from the usual Toni & Guy style. The boys were sporting super fetching 40's style dos and with this, I will stop trying to make "fetch" happen and leave you with some photos.

The sustainable "green" clothing line Prophetik comes to Wilmington at Island Passage! Focus on the Coast got to talk to the Founder/Creator of this fabulous line, Jeff Garner about what makes this "wearable philosophy" so special. Read on...

Focus on the Coast: Explain the philosophy behind the "sustainable" journey of Prophetik's clothing line?

Jeff Garner: A lot of companies don't focus on all areas of a product's sustainability. Some companies pick one thing like sustainable fabric and then they consider themselves a 'green' company. I think there's more to it than that. That's only the gist of it.

Q: How is Prophetik eco-friendly?

A: We call it 'sustainable' and it's through the whole process including the drying, the packaging, even how we travel - is all sustainable.

Q: What is "wearable philosophy" about?

A: That came about when the vision of Prophetik came about. I looked at the industry and saw a gap between the industry and what people wear. Clothing is an extension of oneself. Some of the statements that we use are conversation pieces. It's much more than someone just buying something and looking good; it becomes a part of them.

Q: What are some common misconceptions consumers have about "green" businesses and products?

A: There was a study based on 100 eco-friendly businesses that, sadly, came back that only 10% of these were certified "green" and doing what they said they did. For example, in the fashion business, there was a big rush on bamboo. But the reality is that to use bamboo as a fabric is not a sustainable process. So it goes against what being "green" is all about. A lot of companies used bamboo to enter the "green" market. That's one that's totally misperceived. Just one.

Another example, I do some consulting for Whole Foods stores. This one particular store was carrying an "eco-friendly" line of screen-printed t-shirts. They were trying to get by being eco-friendly based on the concept that it's organic cotton. But the burnout process of the screen-printing is taking a nasty chemical that eats out the poly. It looks amazing, but the reality is that the chemical is gnarly. I've seen people get sick from working in factories where it's used and from the runoff. That's something most consumers wouldn't know. It's sad. The consumers buy these lines, but the lines don't go all the way (being sustainable and eco-friendly).

Q: How do you feel about bringing the Prophetik line to Wilmington?

A: I love Wilmington. It's this creative, artistic community. Back in my younger days, I was up for the lead role in Dawson's Creek against James Van Deer Beek. It's such a creative arts community. I think you guys are on the edge of growth. So to go in the way of the green sustainable movement is great. There is a hunger for it. I think the communitywould support and take it in.

Q: What items will you be carried at Island Passage?

A: They choose what pieces they want to carry. There's a beautiful dress that's painted by elephants. Each dress is unique. The proceeds go back to the sanctuary. The elephant is from the Asian Elephant Conservatory. Also hemp pieces, skinny hemp jeans and boyfriend jackets - a very light, beachy summer line.

Q: Tell me about the dress painted by elephants?

A: We have a line of silk cut up and the elephants paint on that. They paint for two hours a day with their trunks. My whole theory is that these elephants are not disposable. They can take care of themselves with our help. There's a responsibility as humans to change the world that we live in and take care of what we've changed and manipulated in the eco-system.

Primary considerations are low impact on plant and animal life, conservation of limited resources, and waste minimisation.”

But this is also a fashion label, and the look is just as important as the philosophy. Luckily, for both men and women, Prophetik is both ethical and seriously cool. And they even do dresses painted by elephants! “Designing for both men and women becomes a story, as the collections have to complement each other. I actually have a lot of pieces that are unisex as well. For menswear we blend organic silk, hemp and organic cotton for smoking jackets, trousers and waistcoats and for the womenswear we do pieces like organic silk dresses, two-toned hemp cardigan dresses, and organic cotton day dresses. Kicking off Vauxhall Fashion Scout at this February's London Fashion Week is Tennessee-based sustainable brand Prophetik. We have a chat with designer Jeff Garner.

Over the past few years, various initiatives have arisen dedicated to championing new and emerging talent at London Fashion Week. With 21 catwalk shows over five days – not to mention all manner of other films, installations and live performances – taking place at the Freemasons' Hall, Vauxhall Fashion Scout is one of the most exciting.

Tennessee-based sustainable men's and womenswear brand, Prophetik, is kicking the whole thing off on the 19th February, so we thought we'd catch up with the man behind the label, designer Jeff Garner, to see how it's all coming along.

And it seems Jeff is pretty excited about coming to London: “I’m really looking forward to my show, Southern Shores,” he says. “I love the live presentation, the music, the energy. I’ve done a few shows in London, but this will be my first show at one of the main LFW venues. The Freemasons’ Hall is a beautiful building and really suits the brand.”

But it's not all work and no play: “I really enjoy coming to London for horse riding as well. Any time I’m in the city, I’ll take time to ride in Hyde Park. I do it very early, so if you’re up early enough, you may just catch me!”

“London is THE hub of creativity and, from my perspective, London is years ahead when it comes to sustainability in fashion. The fact that London Fashion Week has an ethical exhibition section – estethica – is great. London has really seen where ethical fashion is going and embraced it. There are so many ethical, sustainable, eco-friendly labels in London, and London is the home of the Ethical Fashion Forum. London is where it’s at for brands like mine.”

And the elephants? “One of our signatures is the Elle dress. We have dresses that are made from silk and organic cotton that elephants have painted in collaboration with the AEACP (Asian Elephant Art Conservation Project), which helps to raise funds for an elephant sanctuary in Thailand.”

So what can we expect on the 19th? “This season,” Jeff replies, “is inspired by the American Civil War. Countering strife and uncertainty, the range embodies hope and a romantic notion of another time. We’ll see complex coats and jackets, flowing dresses and capes with varied lengths and layering, all playing on the early concept of sustainability and scarce resources. We’re crafting an artistic mix of garments from remnants and antique, recycled trims. The Civil War will influence the colour palette with blues, greys and slashes of red.”
